Round ornament with the face of a smiling reindeer and a pick bow.

These ornaments turned out to be so incredibly cute. I didn’t have too much of a plan for them. I want to give this a try and see how they turn out. They were so stinking cute that I just needed to make more.

They were a great addition to the items I was selling at my craft shows. These were a little different. They got so many compliments from shoppers and vendors. I sold three of them to one of the other vendors. She buys new ornaments for her kids every year, and it was super exciting that she bought them from me!

You can do many different faces and colour combinations with this, it’s great. They can be customized to your Christmas colours. The most important thing to remember is to have fun with them!

How to assemble:

Finding and sizing the face decal:

  1. Open Design Space, go to images and search for either a gingerbread face or a snowman face.
  2. Add the face(s) you want to work with (remove anything you don’t want).
  3. Add a circle the size of the ornament you are working with, mine are 3 inches.
  4. Take the image you are working with and move it over the circle. If the image goes behind the circle, go to the top, click arrange, and send the image to the front.
  5. Now adjust the image to the desired size.
  6. Repeat for all the different faces or duplicate.

Cutting and removing the vinyl:

Round ornament with the face of a winking snowman.
  1. Turn on the Cricut machine and ensure the premium fine point blade is loaded.
  2. Put vinyl onto the mat(s), depending on how many images you have. The machine wants you to keep feeding it.
  3. Take a brayer or scraper and run it over the vinyl to help adhere the vinyl to the mat
  4. Go to “Make” when you are ready to cut.
  5. Click mat for all materials and click continue.
  6. Set the material to premium vinyl, or for fine or thin images, use the washi sheet setting.
  7. Load the mat into the machine when prompted.
  8. Click the flashing “C” when it starts and repeat as needed.
  9. Follow the prompts in Design Space for the next cut when needed.

Removing & weeding the vinyl:

  1. Unload the machine when prompted.
  2. Flip the mat over and pull the mat off the vinyl. It helps keep the vinyl from curling.
  3. Cut the piece that has the image out of the sheet if you used a full sheet. This is easier to work with.
  4. Repeat as needed for each colour that corresponds with each image example, the reindeer and so on.
  5. Take the weeding tool and remove all the unwanted vinyl. Keep scissors nearby just in case there is a piece you want to cut away.
  6. Repeat as needed.

Applying vinyl to the acrylic ornament:

Round ornament with the face of a gingerbread man.
  1. Cut a piece of transfer tape to match the size of the image you are working with.
  2. Peel the backing off the transfer tape.
  3. Place the transfer tape on top of the vinyl, then take the scrapper and run it over to help adhere the tape and help remove bubbles.
  4. Then flip it over and peel the backing off the vinyl so it’s just the vinyl on the tape, and leave it off to the side for now. Just make sure the sticky side stays up until needed.
  5. Peel the protective plastic off the ornament if you haven’t already.
  6. Place the ornament on the self-healing mat, lined up with the grid lines to help with placement.
  7. Use alcohol wipes to clean off all the dirt and oils. Make sure it is dry.
  8. Place the vinyl where you want it to go, and then take the scraper and run it over to help it adhere and remove some bubbles.
  9. Peel the transfer tape off slowly (take your time). Sometimes I run my fingers over the vinyl just to help adhere, but not necessary.
  10. Repeat as needed for each layer.
  • For example order brown pieces, black pieces and then pink.

Painting the ornament:

  1. Peel the last piece of plastic cover off if not already done.
  2. Clean the ornament with the alcohol wipes and make sure it’s dry.
  3. Take the paint, and foam brush and paint the back however you want. You can do the whole back or just a streak. Do thin layers
  4. Take the heat gun to help dry the paint faster so you can do more coats.
  5. Paint until you are happy with the coverage.
  6. If the edges have paint on then scrap the edges to remove the paint.
  7. Add twine or ribbon to the ornament for hanging on the tree!
