Custom plastic hearts filled with candy.

This is a super cute way to give your Valentine smaller gifts. These are super simple to make and they can be used multiple times which I love. They don’t cost a lot to make if you are on a tight budget, especially if you are making a bunch. You can get the plastic hearts from the dollar store, Michaels or Amazon in bulk. For the few that I made I didn’t use up a lot of vinyl. I was just using up scrap pieces since the wording isn’t that big. Making these little guys would be great for a teacher or someone who works with little ones because they can make a bunch, fill them up and kids can take them home. Then they can have a little decoration and they can hang them from their desks. They are super cute Valentine’s Day projects and gifts. I just love them.

Some ideas of what you can put into these cute plastic hearts: Candy hearts, chocolates, cinnamon hearts, jewelry, money and more.

How to create

Creating the wording

Lettering and position ideas.
  1. Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project.
  2. Measure the size of the plastic heart that you are working with.
  3. Go shapes and add a “heart” to the canvas and adjust it to the size you are working with or as close as you can. This is a guide to get an idea of sizing and placement.
  4. Go to “text” add a text box to the canvas and type in the saying or name. There are some examples above.
  5. Move the text box over the heart, choose which font you want to work and adjust the sizing as needed.
  6. Duplicate the text and change it to the other sayings or names if needed. You may need to adjust the sizing.

Cutting and removing the vinyl

  1. Turn on the machine and make sure you have the blade in the machine.
  2. Add the vinyl to the mat then take the brayer and run it over the vinyl to help secure it to the mat.
  3. Go to “make” when ready to cut.
  4. Choose the mat for “any material” and click “continue or confirm”.
  5. Click “continue” on the preview screen if you are happy with how it looks, you can move around the images in this screen if needed. For example, if you want more room around the images when they are cut.
  6. Choose “washi sheet” or “premium vinyl”. Or pick which best works best especially if using glitter vinyl.
  7. When the “arrow” starts flashing load the mat into the machine.
  8. Press the flashing “C” when prompted to begin the cut.

Removing and weeding the vinyl

  1. Unload the machine when the “arrow” starts flashing.
  2. Flip the mat over and peel the mat of the vinyl. I do this to help keep the vinyl from rolling up.
  3. Cut each image into individual pieces to work with.
  4. Taking the weeding tool and remove the pieces of vinyl that are not needed. If you need to take the scissors and cut the pieces getting in the way.

Applying the vinyl

  1. Take apart the heart (if possible) this will help make the flat so the heart won’t wobble around.
  2. Use an alcohol wipe to clean the plastic heart where you want the vinyl to go.
  3. While it is drying cut a piece of transfer tape a little bit bigger than the size of the image you are working with.
  4. Peel the backing off the transfer tape and place it on the image.
  5. Then run your scraper over the top and then flip it over and run the scraper over it again to help adhere it to the tape.
  6. Peel the backing off the vinyl and the image should be stuck to the tape.
  7. Place the image onto the plastic heart, smooth the middle down first and then smooth the sides down if you need to take the scissors and cut little slits if you need a little slack.
  8. Run the scraper over the top before peeling the tape off.
  9. Fold the tape back as you are peeling back taking your time after taking the tape off I run my finger over it again.
  10. Repeat as needed and add the string to the hearts if desired.

Now you can add all the goodies like candy hearts, chocolates or a little gift inside for your Valentine!
