layered bunny shadow box

Easter brings out some of the cutest and brightest decorations. I saw something similar on Pinterest or Instagram, liked the idea, and made my own. Eventually, I want to try making one a little more intricate, with more layers and maybe lights. This makes a cute table top or wall decoration.

There are so many options when making this type of project. It can be super simple or a little more complicated. The layered image could have two or more layers. It doesn't have to be a bunny; you can do an Easter egg, a baby chick or anything Easter-related. Add fairy lights, and for the items inside, it could be carrots, Easter eggs, or mini bunnies.

Materials:

  • Shadow box 9 by 9 or desired size
  • White or desired colour cardstock for bunny cutout
  • Coloured or patterned Cardstock for backing
  • Little decorative carrots or whatever you want to put in it
  • Glue tape or two-sided tape
  • Foam dots
  • Cricut machine
  • Fine point blade
  • 12 by 12 green mat
  • Brayer

How to create

  1. Create 2 squares, the same size as or just a little smaller than the shadow box. One for the bunny cutout and one for the background.
  2. Go to images and look for the bunny image you want to use, and add it to the canvas.
  3. Move the bunny image over the square and size it to the desired size.
  4. Once the bunny is sized, go to alignment and center the bunny.
  5. Click and highlight the two images and go to “slice”, creating the bunny cutout. If you picked one that has a tail or a bow, remember to keep the cutout.

Cutting the cardstock

  1. Turn on the machine and make sure the fine-point blade is loaded.
  2. Place cardstock on the mat and run the brayer over the mat to help it stick to the mat.
  3. Go to “make it” when ready to cut.
  4. Choose “mat for any material” and click “continue”.
  5. Choose the “cardstock” option that best matches your material.
  6. Load the mat into the machine, then the “arrow” starts flashing.
  7. Click the flashing “C” when prompted to begin the cut.
  8. Repeat for the next cut.

Removing the cardstock

  1. Unload the mat when the “arrow” starts flashing.
  2. Flip the mat over and pull the mat off the cardstock. This will help the cardstock from curling.
  3. Use the spatula to remove any cutouts that are stuck to the mat.
  4. Repeat as needed.

Assembly

  1. Add glue tape to the back of the square with the bunny cutout.
  2. Place the bunny cutout onto the full square.
  3. If there was a tail cutout, take the foam dot and use that to attach the tail.
  4. Lay the shadow box facedown and add the little carrots or the little items you want to add.
  5. Add the bunny cutout to the shadow box.
  6. Add the back and close it.
